When a cooler bottle and its cap are drawn up together, the neck finish stops being a guess. That is the case Plastic Innovations is making to distributors and cooler suppliers this September: its dispenser caps and its PET bottle range are engineered as a single matched system, with both the closures and the containers moulded under one roof in Sandton. The pitch lands as South Africa moves into spring and the warmer stretch of the year, the season when water businesses take a fresh look at what is running on their routes.
Operations are based at 71 Galaxy Ave, Frankenwald, Sandton, where product design, mould design, final product moulding and assembly all share the same floor. Plastic Innovations calls that floor completely horizontally integrated, and it positions itself as the largest dispenser cap manufacturer on the continent. For a supplier that fills and delivers to homes and offices, the practical upshot is straightforward: the bottle, the neck finish and the closure can be specified as one, instead of buying each part elsewhere and hoping the pieces line up.
A bottle range built around PET
On the container side, everything falls under DuraPET, the company’s PET packaging line, which stretches from preforms all the way to finished large format bottles. The water dispenser bottles are moulded from 100% recyclable, BPA free PET, carrying a density of 1 350 kg per cubic metre and a melting point of 260 degrees Celsius. Because PET is insoluble in water, and because the construction sidesteps weak points such as weld lines, Plastic Innovations says a bottle keeps its structural integrity through cycle after cycle of handling.
Several formats make up the range. The 18.9L Dispensor Handle Bottle comes in at 780g with an integrated PET handle, which the company credits with an optimised strength to weight ratio, the separate handle construction also allowing for effortless cleaning. Lighter at 720g, the 18.9L Dispensor Bottle takes a minimalist shape, resists splitting and is built for repeated use cycles. At just 150g, the 10L Bottle is square shaped to make better use of storage space, has a 46mm neck, and ships complete with a secure cap and wide grip handle, serving water alongside juices, oils, sauces and cleaning solutions. Rounding out the set, the Ladies 10L Handle Bottle weighs 460g and is shaped around a comfortable carrying handle.
Both 18.9l water bottles are pointed squarely at cooler and dispenser duty, and the company frames the material as a food safe solution for exactly that job. Standard colours across the whole range are Ocean Blue and Crystal Clear, with additional colours available subject to minimum order quantities. The handle version sets aside a dedicated area for logo visibility, while the standard version leaves ample surface area for branding stickers.
Four closures, one bottle neck
It is the cap range where the pairing really comes into focus. Every one of the four closures is built to fit 18.9 litre bottles, also known as 5 gallon, and each is moulded in LDPE with a density between 917 and 930 kg per cubic metre and a melting point of 110 degrees Celsius. LDPE, much like the PET behind the bottles, is insoluble in water. Where the four part ways is in how the cooler receives the bottle.
At 15g, the Hydrolock Non Spill cap reseals and relies on a specially designed inner washer system, with a tamper proof seal fitted as standard, and it arrives in Royal Blue. The UniCap, 10.5g, features a four way window that tears cleanly into four equal sections, is made for a spiked pot system cooler and comes in Ocean Blue. Lightest of the group at 9g, the SnapCap ships in two configurations, with an inner washer or without, and the company says it is compatible with water cooler spikes of any profile. The MultiCap, 10g, seals with an inner washer for a uniform seal and adds a tamper proof sticker that covers the cap surface. As with the bottles, additional colours across the cap range are available based on minimum order quantities.
Taken as a set, the four closures span the common cooler formats a South African distributor is likely to be running at any one time, which tends to be a mixed fleet rather than a single model. A supplier keeping older spiked pot units in service beside newer machines can match different caps to the same bottle, instead of swapping the bottle to suit each cooler.
From preform to pallet
Upstream of the finished containers are the preforms. Plastic Innovations makes heavyweight PET preforms in 400g, 720g and 775g, then applies stretch blow moulding to turn them into large format bottles. Producing the preform, the bottle and the closure inside the same plant hands the company control over the neck finish, the very point where a seal either holds or fails.
Warehouse capacity is another part of the picture, and the company ties its extensive storage to quick turnaround times and stock availability. For a business that refills and delivers on a fixed route, having stock on hand is as concrete a concern as the design of the container, and it is one reason the manufacturer keeps volume in the building rather than producing purely to order.
Who the range serves
Among the sectors it supplies, Plastic Innovations counts water and sanitation, mining and resources, security and defence, furniture and interiors, technology and electronics, and food and beverage. On the water side, that reaches bottled water plants, home and office delivery operators, cooler rental businesses and retailers. Its water cooler bottles are stocked on Takealot and Makro Marketplace as well, letting a household or a smaller buyer reach the range without a bulk order, while bulk and custom orders go directly through the company. Both the bottle and cap ranges are supplied into South Africa and across Africa.
Design and moulding beyond bottles
The water range is only one slice of a wider plastic injection moulding operation. Plastic Innovations covers product design, mould design, final product moulding and assembly, pointing to more than three decades of experience and hundreds of moulding projects behind that work. It sums up its design thinking as the GSDS principle, which stands for green, sleek, durable and simple, and which the company describes as balancing eco friendliness and cost efficiency against elegance, durability and functionality. Beyond DuraPET, the business also runs its MinePlas and AllPro lines, among them stemming plugs for blasting on the mining side.
Rather than sitting apart from the engineering, sustainability is treated as part of it. The PET across the bottle range is 100% recyclable, the company recycles hundreds of tons of plastic annually, and it points to energy efficient machinery in its facility. A large format bottle that resists splitting and is built for repeated use cycles also stays in service longer before it heads back for recycling, which is the everyday shape durability takes inside a refill business.
September signals the turn of the season in South Africa, and the run up to the hottest months is when cooler suppliers count stock, retire bottles that have reached the end of their service life, and confirm the closures on the shelf still match the machines out on their routes. Plastic Innovations is steering that trade towards a range where the bottle and the cap were designed to work against one another from the start, and towards a manufacturer that makes both.
