Over 100 Vehicles go up in smoke

5 June 2015 by Alan

Durban – A rampant veld fire led to more than 100 vehicles impounded by the eThekwini Metro Police being burnt, police said on Friday.

Ethekwini Metro Police spokesperson Superintendent Eugene Msomi said most of the vehicles in the Queensburgh pound were due to be auctioned.

He said it was believed the fire jumped the pound wall and the cars caught alight in the early hours of Friday morning.

“The fire brigade is investigating the cause of the fire, but we do not suspect that there was anything suspicious,” Msomi said.

He said police would begin determining which vehicles were to be auctioned. The owners of those not set to be auctioned will be contacted.

“We need to establish whose vehicle it was, before we can dispose of them.”

He was unable to confirm exactly how many vehicles were in the pound, but he was sure there were more than 100.
