Cell C Sharks Director of Rugby Neil Powell has the pleasure of a full squad to select from and has chosen a Springbok-heavy side to take on Scarlets this Saturday at the Parc Y Scarlets in Wales.
After an enforced break due to this year’s Rugby World Cup, the Springboks have been unleashed on the Vodacom United Rugby Championship once more as they look to maintain a hold on a place in the knock-out rounds.
Scarlets have not quite enjoyed the success this season they would have hoped for and languish near the bottom of the log, in 14th position. Last year’s fixture, at Hollywoodbets Kings Park, ended in a 37-20 victory for the Cell C Sharks, a bonus point win with many of the same players who will do duty in this season’s clash, almost exactly a year later.
However, we know that no team can be written off and the Springboks in the Cell C Sharks side will be bringing their own level of intensity, leadership, character and standards that will drive their team-mates to deliver a special performance.
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi leads the team out and his all-Bok front row of Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi and Thomas du Toit will be called upon to deliver results upfront. Throw in Eben Etzebeth and you know this is a pack that will back down for nothing.
An athletic and mobile back row will provide impetus on attack while Springbok halfbacks Jaden Hendrikse and Curwin Bosch will be called on to direct traffic. Then there’s the powerful duo of Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Lukhanyo Am to keep everything in the midfield under control, while the likes of Makazole Mapimpi and co, will be called upon to deliver the killer blow.

Fresh off their 52-13 win over Free State at Hollywoodbets Kings Park last weekend, the Cell C Sharks travel to Kempton Park to take on the Valke in their SA Under 20 Cup clash.
Continuing their unbeaten form in the competition to date is the main focus and they will be looking for a bonus point victory over the team lying last in the seven team table.
The Valke have conceded nearly 50 points per game so far and are struggling, but the Cell C Sharks Under 20s can’t let any sense of complacency set in when the teams meet on Saturday at 1pm, at Barnard Stadium.
Coach JP Pietersen is a happy man, having lead the team to its position on the log where they have no yet been defeated.
“We’re pretty stoked with our results so far, but the job is not done yet,” he warns.
“We have a good group of players who have the buy-in of what we want to achieve as a team and much of the success behind the team comes from the fact that we have a group of leaders who have taken ownership of their role and they drive the standards.
“That’s been a massive part of our success so far. They’re playing well and there’s nice cohesion, the defence has also been good, which all contributes.
“The Valke away this week is all about keeping focus, it’s one game at a time and it’s a game we have to win with a bonus point to remain on target for a home final.”
