Nxele’s Arrest Welcomed

Statement by Mzamo Billy MP – DA NCOP Member on Security & Justice:

The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the arrest of suspended KwaZulu-Natal Correctional Services Commissioner, Mnikelwa Nxele, on charges of fraud and money laundering.

While the arrest is a significant development, it raises serious questions about the effectiveness of internal controls, oversight mechanisms, and consequence management within the Department of Correctional Services.

South Africans deserve answers. How long were these alleged activities taking place? When did the Department become aware of the allegations? Were there warning signs that were ignored? Are other officials implicated?
Most importantly, what safeguards failed to prevent a senior official from allegedly engaging in such conduct?

The DA will use our position in Parliament, particularly through the NCOP Select Committee on Security and Justice, to seek a full briefing from the Department of Correctional Services and the Minister on the circumstances surrounding this matter and any broader governance failures that may have enabled it.

This case must not be treated as the misconduct of a single individual. It presents an opportunity to examine whether corruption and weak accountability mechanisms are being adequately addressed within Correctional Services and across the broader justice and security cluster.

The DA remains committed to ensuring that those entrusted with public office are held accountable and that any losses suffered by the state are recovered. Public confidence in our justice institutions depends on transparency, accountability, and swift action against corruption.
