It is all about gaining prestige and bragging rights at the annual University Sport of South Africa (USSA) Golf Tournament. Numerous tertiary institutions from around South Africa will compete, and the talented 8 member Varsity College Golf Team’s angle of approach is one of determination – to ‘carry’ the trophy home.
Says Michael Ryan, Varsity College Golf Team Captain: “We, as proud representatives of Varsity College, The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) and our sponsor mCubed, intend making new ‘divots’ and leaving a lasting impression during the tournament from 29 June – 03 July at the Port Shepstone Country Club on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast”.
The course is a Par 72 course, with forest lining the front 9 holes and wind and water affecting play in the back 9 holes. When the wind picks up, this course is known for becoming exceptionally challenging.
This is the 4th consecutive year that Varsity College’s Golf Team will be facing fierce competition from, among other, some of the traditional universities. Last year the team, which is part of the Varsity College Golf Academy, placed 4th in the B division, and 1st and 2nd in the C division and under the guidance of team manager (Jolene Mortimer) and coach Tyrone Twilley they are aiming for top shots during the tournament. Team members are: Michael Ryan, (2nd year BCOM, Sandton), Lorenzo Sardoz (2nd year BCOM, Sandton), Collin Campher (2nd year BCOM, Sandton), Shane Martin, (3rd year BCOM, Sandton), Shannon Naidoo (2nd year BACC, Sandton), Scott Heathfield (1st year BCOM, Sandton), Onkgopotse Nkosi (1st year BCOM, Sandton) and Clayton Mansfield (HCBPP, Westville).
This is the 10th annual USSA Golf Tournament, which celebrates the growing interest in and the success of golf on tertiary level. Some of the participating tertiary institutions include the University of Stellenbosch, University of the Free State, Centurion Academy, Walter Sisulu University, University of Pretoria and Rhodes University.
