MRL Confirms Draft & Player Allocation System Ahead of 2027 Season

Johannesburg, South Africa — The Mzansi Rugby League (MRL) has officially confirmed that 60% of player recruitment for the league’s inaugural 2027 season will operate through a centralized Draft and player allocation system designed to promote competitive balance, player opportunity and long-term league sustainability. The balance of player recruitment will be covered by the open market.

The Draft system forms a core part of the MRL’s broader vision to build a modern professional rugby ecosystem rooted in fairness, structure and long-term commercial growth.

Launching in March 2027, the MRL Premier Division will feature 10 founding clubs competing in a full home-and-away professional season across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

According to the league, the Draft process will allow clubs to build their inaugural squads through a structured player allocation system ahead of the 2027 season.

The MRL says the objective of the system is to:

create competitive balance
distribute talent across clubs
expand professional player opportunities
avoid excessive concentration of talent within a small number of teams

“The Draft system is about building a healthier long-term league ecosystem,” said Matthew Kriel, Head of Recruitment at the MRL.

“We want clubs entering Season 1 with the ability to compete, build identities and grow supporter bases over time. Competitive balance is critical in modern professional sports.”

The league confirmed that player recruitment will consist of:

direct scouting
player engagements
club recruitment
talent identification
Draft Night allocations

The MRL’s Head of Recruitment has said the league has started direct player scouting and recruitment processes across South Africa. According to the league’s operational roadmap, Draft Night is expected to become one of the MRL’s first major public activations ahead of the inaugural season.

The MRL believes the Draft system also creates a more accessible pathway for players outside traditional professional rugby structures.

“The MRL was created to expand opportunity,” the statement continued.

“We believe South Africa has a massive amount of untapped rugby talent across schools, clubs, universities and communities. The Draft system helps create structured access into the professional game.”
