With the recent spate of deadly accidents on the country’s roads, Cabinet has urged all motorists to exercise caution while behind the wheel.
“Such accidents have left some families destitute and they also have a serious negative impact on the economy,” said the national executive in a statement after its fortnightly meeting.
Twenty-three lives were recently lost in the Pinetown/M13 (Field’s Hill) accident, while 10 people were killed in the R66/R34 Nkwalini accident after the annual Reed Dance.
Sanele May, the driver of the 18-wheeler truck, which ploughed into four mini bus taxis and a car on September 5 in Pinetown, has been charged with 22 counts of murder.
Cabinet has called on traffic authorities to continue to maintain zero tolerance towards unroadworthy vehicles and drunken driving, while it impressed upon pedestrians to respect traffic laws. – SAnews.gov.za
