Moor Scores KZN’s highest honour:
Alison Moor was crowned Scorer of the Season at the recent KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Awards Evening, just reward for a personality who has become entrenched in the game throughout South Africa and part of the KZNCU furniture for thirty years.
Having started scoring as a ten year-old youngster, Moor has gone on to travel the world and met many of the sport’s greats through her scoring interest that has spanned three decades.
“Barbara Lane gave 40 years of her life to scoring before retiring while Leo Maistry (32), Wendy Bramley (29) and I have nearly a century of combined service between us!” laughs Moor.
“It has been a great journey for me personally though and it is nice to receive this award and be recognized for the time that I have given to the sport,” she adds.
With the craft having been in her genes, Moor was destined to fulfil the vital numerical role after developing a great interest in the game at a young age.
“I have always had a passion for all sport, but especially cricket!” explains Moor. “I developed a love for the game when I used to watch from the side lines whenever my brother played.”
“My mom had been a scorer and so she then taught me how to score when I was ten years old and from there I just got more and more involved.
“I even went on to become a qualified umpire too and umpired some of the lower leagues in England before eventually settling on scoring.”
Moor’s big break then came when former national radio commentator Michael Toms was looking for a new scorer, paving the way for the emerging talent to explore the world through her trade.
“Michael had apparently had a terrible day on air and was looking for a new scorer so he rang me up and agreed to join him.
“Bob Woolmer later asked me to become the Proteas official scorer and that took me on some incredible tours of Australia, England and the Caribbean.
“I was also involved in the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup in England and, sadly, scored ‘that run out’ between Lance Klusener and Allan Donald in the semi-final.
“Rubbing shoulders with some the game’s biggest names is another highlight, none more so than being lucky enough to meet my hero, Rahul Dravid!”
Locally Moor has played a vital role in scoring in KZN having been a founding member of the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Scorers’ Association 21 years ago and currently serving as the organisation’s President.
“It is nearly time for me to move on but I will be around again next season as we look to put a few more plans in place.
“The KZNCSA is extremely lucky to have a very strong Executive Committee though, the core of which has been together for the past eight years, so the Association is in some very good hands.
“On the ground level we do need to look to grow the game and clubs are where we desperately need to target however it is difficult to get people to commit to this in this day and age.
“Through Cricket South Africa’s funding, there is now proper remuneration for linear scorers though so hopefully we can see things grow in this area soon.”
