Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo this morning, 3 March 2014 paid a surprise visit to the newly relocated beneficiaries at the Cornubia Human Settlements Project. The purpose of the visit was for the Mayor to witness how the lives of the people have changed after they were moved to Cornubia since December last year.
Nxumalo spent almost half of his day knocking from house to house interacting with the residents and congratulating them for receiving houses. About 151 families have already been relocated to Cornubia from various parts of the City with the majority from the informal settlements.
“I wish to congratulate each of you for meeting the criteria to qualify for these houses. I am wishing you all the best in your stay here and hope that you will treat these houses at the best of your ability”, said Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo.
Two families from Umbilo and Phoenix were also handed keys to their new houses by the Mayor today. Upon their arrival, Mayor assisted them while moving their belongings inside the house.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr Vusi Shabangu thanked the Municipality for making it possible for him to own a house. “I never thought I will have a house of my own as it happened today. Since 1994, government has delivered in many ways. I have received a house and some people in other areas have benefitted from other services like water and electricity,” said Shabangu.
Relocations of about 328 families will be starting in the next two weeks where the Municipality will be transporting atleast 20 families a day.
