As the country commemorates 16 Days of Activism for No violence against Women and Children, Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo was dismayed to learn about the rape and stabbing of a 10 year-old girl in his hometown Inchanga, west of Durban.
Nxumalo said violence against women and children is a societal problem which often leads to devastating and tragic consequences, such as loss of life and can only be eradicated if society acts in unison to bring the perpetrators to book.
“We urge communities to work with the Municipality to create a safe environment for women and children by reporting such cases to police,” he said.
The campaign is part of government’s intervention strategies aimed at creating awareness on the negative impact of violence on women and children and to encourage collective action against all types of abuse and its prevention in our communities.
Tomorrow, 3 December 2014, the Mayor will visit the young girl at RK Khan Hospital, where she is currently being treated.
