EThekwini Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo immediately rushed to Lindelani Township near KwaMashu this morning, 10 June 2015, amid reports that more than a thousand residents had blockaded roads with burning tyres and boulders.
The irate protesters also surrounded the home of the local Councillor and destroyed a water metre during the protest. The residents’ grievances included the need for more houses to be built and the lack of speed humps in the area.
Nxumalo vehemently condemned the vandalism of Municipal property and other Municipal assets. He urged members of the Lindelani Community to table their concerns through appropriate channels so that they can be addressed amicably without resorting to violence.
The Mayor also requested that a Task Team be formed which will consist of 10 community members. A meeting is expected to be held on Monday, 15/06/2015 at the Lindelani Community Hall to formally address the community’s concerns through constructive dialogue.
