A community meeting will be held this week to address the concerns raised by residents of Ward 23, who blocked the M19 for over five hours today, 14 September 2015.
Over 300 residents caused traffic disruptions as they placed tyres, planks and other items on the busy road. EThekwini officials were on scene to diffuse the situation and address the residents’ concerns. The group dispersed at 12h00 after barricading the road around 07h00 this morning.
A preliminary meeting will be held with community leaders, the ward councillor and relevant City departments to get to the crux of the matter. Thereafter, a mass community meeting will be held to interact with all residents this week. Residents want electricity to be installed in their informal settlement. Displaced residents during the attacks on foreign nationals have also been unable to return to their homes alleging that their informal dwellings have been sold.
All claims made by the disgruntled residents will be investigated by the Municipality.
Police are on scene and will remain there until tomorrow, Tuesday, 15 September 2015 to ensure there are no further disruptions.
