A local ski-boat with engine failure off-shore of Umhlanga was assisted by NSRI Durban to get back to their launch site at the Durban Undersea Club.
Tim Edwards, NSRI Durban duty coxswain, said:
At 06h13, Thursday, 12 November, NSRI Durban duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from 2 local crew on a ski-boat reporting engine failure and drifting out to sea off-shore of Umhlanga.
The crew on the ski-boat had launched earlier at the Durban Undersea Club and they deployed a drogue into the water to slow down their drift and they raised the alarm.
NSRI Durban duty crew responded to the Durban sea rescue base and the sea rescue craft Spirit of Surfski 6 was launched.
On the NSRI craft arriving on the scene an NSRI rescue swimmer was put onboard the casualty boat and assisted the casualty crew to get their engines started and our sea rescue craft escorted them to Vetchies where at the back breaker line the casualty crafts engines stalled.
The casualty craft was rafted to our sea rescue craft and we brought them safely ashore.
Additional NSRI shore crew attended at Vetchies and we assisted the casualty crew to recover the casualty boat and no further assistance was required.
