With the number of confirmed rabies cases in the KZN South Coast region rising, Scottburgh-based non-profit organisation, 4 Paws and a Tale Rescue, and Amanzimtoti SPCA set up a vaccination station in Malundi Township (V-Section in Craigieburn) on Saturday, 3 September. Nicky Koekemoer of 4 Paws said: “We have had far more positive confirmed rabies cases in the immediate area than we would have dreamed of, which is why this outreach was decided upon. We set up the station at 8am and people were already queueing with their animals, so we started vaccinating at 9am. We vaccinated 130 dogs and cats in total with every one dewormed. We also supplied Hills Science dog food to all dog owners.”

Special thanks were extended to Amanzimtoti SPCA for supplying the rabies vaccines, de-wormers and the necessary tools to perform the vaccinations, as well as Luke Keyser, Delani Ncwengi and Sibo Ncube for keeping the animals under control; Jo Laughton from Seadoone Vet and volunteer Kaylie Smith for giving up their Saturday and assisting; and to Scott Vet for providing de-flea medication. Koekemoer also said a special thanks to the community for understanding the importance of vaccinations, particularly to those who came from far.
