This week’s Clean My City Programme at Point and Addington areas focused on the enforcement of bylaws related to placement of merchandise on the City’s sidewalks.
During the operation businesses were fined for placing some of their merchandise in front of their shops, without permission.
The Spokesperson of Metro Police, Eugene Msomi warned shop owners that they should not have their merchandise on the sidewalk as it is an offence and they could be fined for that. He said Metro Police normally confiscate goods which are on the pavements because they are an obstacle to pedestrians.
Durban Solid Waste Education Officers conducted extensive education on the people who live around the city centre. The Manager of Durban Solid Waste, Simon Nyawo said people should understand the importance of rightfully disposing waste.
“Some of the shop owners said they do not have bins and a plan to provide bins is in progress. The businesses and community must work closely with the Municipality to ensure that there is a reciprocal cooperation between citizens and the Municipality. We always encourage businesses to clean their areas,” said Nyawo.
The operation forms part of ensuring that citizens live in a clean and well maintained environment. Repairing of inlets, broken signs and filling of potholes were amongst the issues which were tackled during the cleanup.
