Law Teachers Conference announces Navi Pillay, Judge President Jappie and Prof Jansen as keynote speakers

18 December 2015 by My Durban

Kwazulu-Natal on MyPR:

Former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem (Navi) Pillay who, in 1967, was the first woman to start a law practice in KwaZulu-Natal, will address delegates at The Society of Law Teachers of Southern Africa Conference 2015. Pillay will be the guest speaker at the spectacular Juta Gala Dinner on the 8th of July at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom. This event culminates the conference proceedings.

Says Navi Pillay: “I welcome the Southern African law Teachers Conference and am honoured to participate in their discussions on legal education, justice and ethics. Law teachers have a crucial role in nurturing and training law students and practitioners, so that they become champions of justice and human rights for all. Human Rights are the best argument to counter a culture of disregard for the rule of law, and huge economic and social inequalities and to demand accountability. Lawyers are best placed to protect and promote a culture of respect for rights and principles.”

The more than 100 speakers who will address the conference, will include nationally and internationally recognised speakers such as renowned education academic Prof Jonathan Jansen; KwaZulu-Natal Judge President Achmat Jappie, CEO and Director of Legal Education and Development at the Law Society of South Africa Nic Swart and Mark Waterhouse who is a professor of Law at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law

The conference, themed ‘Ethics in Law,’ will run from the 6th – 8th July, 2015 at the Varsity College Durban North Campus.

The themes for the plenary sessions include: Ethics in legal training: the need for a professional identity, The merits of the 5 year LLB degree and The expiration date of ‘Affirmative Action’ in SA: Now or Never.

Says Fiona Kaplan, Head of the Varsity College School of Law: “We’re thrilled to be hosting plenary speakers of this calibre. They have all contributed greatly to legal education and social justice in many ways. I believe that their contribution to the conference will be invaluable.”

The conference will be a great platform to connect, network and mingle with colleagues from other law faculties. A number of events have been planned for the evenings. These include:
Ushaka Marine World – 6 July 2015

The first evening’s activities, hosted by Varsity College and guaranteed to be a lot of fun, will take place on Durban’s beautiful beachfront at uShaka Marine World.
Tasty snacks and great conversation will be the order of the evening.

Lexis Nexis Dinner – 7 July 2015

Lexis Nexis will host a casual and relaxed dinner for all delegates at the Breakers Resort in Umhlanga.

Juta Gala Dinner – 8 July 2015

The spectacular Juta Gala Dinner will be held at one of Durban’s finest, Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom, a venue which prides itself on views over the warm, Indian Oceans as well as inland views over the beautiful rolling hills of Zululand.
The evening will become even more captivating when ex United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and esteemed guest speaker, Navi Pillay addresses delegates at the event.
