KZNCU streamlining development structures:
Durban – It has been just over a week since the realignment to the KZN Cricket Union (KZNCU) Township and Rural Programme with the KZNCU Hub and RPC Development programme and so far, apart from a few teething problems, things have been running smoothly, says programme manager Sanelisiwe Kuzwayo.
“Transition and change are always challenging – and we have to remember that we are working with fifty coaches who had to be reassured that they are still very important to cricket development in KZN,” she said.
“We are confident that as a team, we will adapt to the changes and reach new heights.”
According to Heinrich Strydom, the CEO of KZN Cricket, the success of the township and development programme in KZN is undisputed.
“The value of this incredible programme is clear to see with many players going on to play at the highest levels and many coaches and administrators graduating to higher honours,” he said.
“I have to thank Linda Zondi for his vision in creating this system more than ten years ago, and the current manager, Sane Kuzwayo, who has been incredible in sharing her passion and spreading the love for our beautiful game.
“The support given by the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation has been immense, and the role that the Willowton Group has played through the annual Sunfoil tournament deserves special recognition”
Previously KwaZulu-Natal had 50 development coaches operating in townships all over the province, three coaching coordinators along the coastal areas and six hubs through the CSA system (Sweetwaters, Imbali, Reservoir Hills, Umlazi, Ilembe and the Chatsworth RPC).
“The new structure of hubs and RPC’s will ensure that the whole KZN development pipeline works as one, whilst taking into consideration the unique challenges and opportunities within each community.
“The objective of a hub is to serve as an effective cricketing centre, which services a community within an area of jurisdiction of a CSA affiliate, in this case the KZNCU.
“Hubs are tasked with the objective of developing and maintaining effective cricketing structures from grassroots right through to senior cricket,” Strydom explained.
The new structure will build on these past success stories and ensure a closer alignment to Cricket South Africa (CSA), whilst speaking to the vision of making cricket accessible to all in the KZN province.
During the past year Strydom has been on a mission to ensure that the Union operates at its full capacity and that all resources are optimally implemented. The way forward will align all development activities under one umbrella and will contribute towards the sustainability of the Union.
It will also provide more stability to the coaches and administrators, whilst challenging them to improve on their previous achievements.
This year CSA has officially allocated three more hubs to Northdale, INK and Umzinto, whilst KZNCU has added six more (Newcastle, Umkhanyakude, King Cetshwayo, Uphongolo, Inner West and Port Shepstone). This will bring the total number of hubs to fifteen, covering eight of the eleven districts.
With the continued support from the Department of Sport and Recreation and the Willowton Group the Union’s aims will be to consolidate the new structure and ultimately grow its reach to all eleven districts of the province in a responsible and sustainable manner.
As confirmed by the KZNCU President, Mr. Ben Dladla: “We are truly committed to the adage that cricket is for everyone. We are taking cricket to all the corners of KZN and we want to promise the other districts that we will reach them soon.
“We expect communities to embrace these hubs and work with our coaches to achieve maximum success.”
