KZNCU & ILM-SA fund movie experience:
Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union gathered children from the Rural and Township Development programme and sent them to Cine Centre at Suncoast Casino on Monday to watch the most talked about film of the year, Black Panther.
Fatima Asmal who works closely with the department assisted immensely in this initiative. Asmal worked hard on pooling together her resources in order to make this opportunity become a reality for the children.
“We put our heads together as a team, and having compiled all the logistics, I then contacted AB Moosa Jnr. the Managing Director at Cine Centre, whom I have known to be very giving, he then came back with a generous discount for the movie tickets,” Asmal said.
“So, through my Non-Profit Organisation, ILM – SA, I put the word out there and the response from my pool of donors was tremendous,” she concluded.
KZN Cricket Union Marketing Manager, Nana Ngubane said that this movie was a big deal for her and would not let a chance to have children from the township miss out on it.
“Black Panther was a soul awakening experience for me, my way of thinking shifted and started to view the world as a village,” she commented.
“I believe the movie is an extension of a worldwide conversation about inclusion and understanding the similarities and differences amongst nations.
“The display of non-stereotypical strong lead characters that feel attainable – I wanted to share my experience with young minds, to inspire and motivate,” Ngubane said.
The Union managed to raise funds that accommodated 123 children, with many that had never been to a cinema before while Promo Basket and Hollywoodbets Dolphins captain Khaya Zondo made it possible to get the children to the Suncoast Cine Centre by funding the transport costs.

KZNCU, DSR and Sunfoil Township And Rural Development:
The KZNCU, DSR and Sunfoil Township And Rural Development under 19 side suffered a ten wicket loss at the hands of Westville Boys High School in the semi-finals of the KZN Coastal stream of the Coca Cola Schools T20 Challenge at Kearsney College on Friday.
But, Sanelisiwe Kuzwayo, the manager of the Development Programme, told the team that they could be proud of themselves. “I know you’re disappointed, but I’m proud that you’ve come this far,” she said. “You face many challenges and yet you have come this far – you can be proud of yourselves.” Kuzwayo was referring to the fact that the players making up the side live in various townships and rural areas across KZN and don’t enjoy the luxury of training together regularly. On Friday, each player had to board public transport to Kingsmead in the early hours of the morning in order to be transported to Kearsney from a central point.
On their way to the semi-final, the team impressed, losing one game and winning five (including a fixture against Glenwood High School).
“I’m happy but I’m sad,” said one of the Development side’s coaches Lungisani Simelane. “Happy because we reached this stage for the first time but sad to lose the game.”
“The boys are sad because they didn’t win but we told them reaching the semi finals is an achievement. Last year we reached the quarter finals. We are looking forward to reaching the finals next year.”
