Pietermaritzburg – Eugenia Mbeje of Ashdown, in Pietermaritzburg, says she is happy to have President Jacob Zuma visit her town on service delivery issues during today’s Imbizo.
Mbeje spoke to SAnews on Tuesday while waiting for the President to arrive at Durban University of Technology, Indumiso Campus, where he will be leading a Presidential Imbizo.
She said she was especially happy to know that the President will be visiting various households in the town.
“I personally think that government has done a lot in our town. We have put a lot of problems behind us… We have received many services from government. Our councillors are really trying, but there is still more work that needs to be done,” said Mbeje, whose community falls under the Umgungundlovu District.
The 64-year-old said various government departments normally visit her community on service delivery outreach programmes.
“The Home Affairs truck comes to our community to help people who have problems with their identity documents and birth certificates. Social workers are also assisting on many issues in my community,” she said.
Mbeje said although she was happy with government services so far, drug abuse and crime was still a concern for many in her community.
“These boys who smoke ‘wunga’ (an illegal drug) are really hard to manage. Even police are losing the battle against them,” she said.
Today, the Presidential Imbizo will see President Zuma and various Cabinet Ministers visit households across Pietermaritzburg, and later engage with community members during the Imbizo.
More than 1 500 people are already seated in a tent on the campus’s sports ground, and more are still to be transported to the venue.
A number of Deputy Ministers are also expected to support the event, as well as the KZN Premier, MECs and Mayors. – More Matshediso, SAnews.gov.za
