KwaZulu-Natal police say they have during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign arrested 211 alleged rapists.
They arrested suspects for sex related offences, including indecent assault, child abuse and rape.
The suspects were sentenced by various courts in the province, resulting in 56 convictions, which included nine sentences of life imprisonment, according to Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
Ngobeni attributed the successful convictions to the dedication and capability of the various Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units that effectively investigate crimes involving women and children.
She also expressed her confidence in the judicial system, which has meted out fitting sentences to the rapists during 16 Days of Activism.
“These successes are a clear indication that the dedicated men and women in blue are committed to make this province a safer place for our women and children 365 days of the year,” she said.
The 16 Days of Activism campaign takes place annually between 25 November and 10 December every year. It is aimed at creating awareness around the abuse of women and children. – SAnews.gov.za
