KZN Cricket Union host successful AGM – Featured Durban Blog

28 July 2019 by My Durban

KZN Cricket Union host successful AGM:

Durban – The 26th Annual General Meeting of the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union took place at Kingsmead Cricket Stadium last night, with a number of successes from the past season being highlighted as the union plots its path forward into the 2019-2020 season.

The meeting was well attended by representatives from all districts, represented by members from towns as far as Newcastle, Pongola, Empangeni and Port Shepstone. The President of KZN Cricket Ben Dladla spoke about the importance of making sure that all the parts involved work together as a whole.

“We must continue to work together for the benefit of KZN Cricket and cricket in South Africa,” he said. “None of us are smarter than all of us together.”

CEO of KZN Cricket Heinrich Strydom focused on the many positives that came from the union over the past 12 months which included 12 players selected to represent South Africa at Protea level and SA Under 19, both male and female.

The Union was awarded the coveted KZN Sports Federation of the year award by the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation and the flagship side, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins, reached another final during the past season which takes the tally for the white ball format to three finals out of the last four competitions.

The KZN Women’s side won both formats in the B-section and have also qualified for the top six competition for the following season.

Amongst the junior ranks, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins Cubs, were crowned national champions for the first time.

The KZN Cricket Union have always been at the forefront of cricket development country wide and this past season saw the union successfully realign their Township programme into an RPC/Hubs development programme. The 2019 Sunfoil KZN DSR Hubs Tournament was a testament to this success as 15 teams fought it out at Michaelhouse over four days recently, before being joined by some other provinces for an elite Hub competition.

Strydom also focused on the international season and the matches that were hosted at Kingsmead. The ground enjoyed good attendances for the limited overs matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka and was also the venue for one of the most memorable test matches in South Africa against Sri Lanka.

KZN Cricket was once again given a clean audit and has managed to turn their financial position into a positive one. It was another season of good corporate governance and the union scored a 100 percent rating on CSA’s scorecard.

Heading into the new season Strydom and his team have got big plans for a revamp of the facilities at Kingsmead and improved spectator and stakeholder experiences, under the name ‘Project Kingsmead’. It includes the upgrading of food vending facilities, relaying of pitches, upgrading practice facilities and a general upliftment in the quality of service delivery. It will also focus on making the rich history of this Union visible for all to celebrate.

The Union also looks forward to the Proteas hosting World Cup winners England in a One Day International and a T20 International at Kingsmead. The upcoming season will also see a renewed focus on club cricket and as part of this the second edition of the Dolphins Premier League.

Strydom thanked the whole family of sponsors and stakeholders that have made the past season another success and wants to continue the push towards excellence by all involved.

“We are merely temporary custodians of this beautiful game and we need to leave it in a better state than what we received it in.”
