KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Nomusa Dube-Ncube, has condemned the brutal murder of councillor Neliswa Nzuza of the Indaka Local Municipality near Ladysmith over the Easter weekend.
According to reports, Nzuza was stabbed to death by her husband in full view of congregants in church.
“The death of a councillor, who is an elected servant of the people, leaves a gaping void in the sphere of local government and has robbed us of one more foot soldier in our fight against poverty, inequality and unemployment,” said MEC Dube-Ncube.
“It appears that this tragedy, which cast a shadow over Easter festivities in the community of Indaka, was prompted by domestic violence, which the provincial government condemns with equal force.
“On behalf of all stakeholders in the provincial government and the entire local governance fraternity, we extend heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and the wider community of Indaka.
“It is incidents such as this heinous crime that remind us that domestic violence remains a grave challenge in our communities and as a government that is committed to social cohesion, we have to ensure that our people live in harmony,” said Dube-Ncube.
The department has urged the law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrator of this violent incident is brought to justice and that calm is restored in the community of Indaka. – SAnews.gov.za
