To celebrate International Museums Day on Sunday, 18 May 2014, eThekwini Municipal Museums in partnership with the Chief Albert Luthuli Museum will on Tuesday, 20 May 2014, host a celebration where members of the public will have an opportunity to view collections that are kept at the various museums.
The theme for the 2014 International Museums Day is “Museum Collections Make Connections”. Pupils, educators and members of the public will have an opportunity to listen to, touch and feel items from the collections of museums.
The objective of the celebration is to create dialogue among our citizens, particularly between the old and young generation. It is envisaged that through interaction with the collections, the audience will recall memories (good or bad) and this should help create dialogue and build connections.
The Durban Art Gallery, Durban Natural Science and Local History Museums will be part of the celebrations and have collections on display for people to view.
The International Museums Day has been celebrated since 1977. This day, around the globe gives all museum professionals the opportunity to engage with the public, as well as inform them of the benefits of utilising the museum, breaking any cultural or social past barriers whilst making the museum more accessible.
