International Drugs Strategy must be Implemented

7 November 2013 by Alan

After a Bolivian medical student was arrested at King Shaka International Airport this week while carrying cocaine, the IFP has made calls on government to implement the international drugs strategy, which draws together international and domestic agencies in tackling drug trafficking.

The IFP spokesperson on Police, MP Velaphi Ndlovu said “We want to applaud the efforts of the SAPS that resulted in the biggest drug bust in KwaZulu-Natal. Drug trafficking should be fought in a synchronised manner. There is a need for cooperation between developed and developing countries in order to curb the growing trend of cross-border crime. Due to porous borders, weak immigrations laws and improper accessible global transportation infrastructure, crime is rampant and we need to clamp down on it”

“The international drugs strategy will reduce the flow of illicit drugs into South Africa and limit the direct transportation of illicit drugs, from source of supply.

In addition, we want to emphasize the benefits of a comprehensive approach to combating the threats posed by drug trafficking and organised crime. Anyone involved in drug trafficking including drug lords must receive stiff sentences, without the possibility of parole” concluded Ndlovu

The IFP believes that that drug trafficking and use represent a problem that must be addressed through remedies that do not necessarily involve arresting people or involving the police at all.
