Inspiration Behind Jersey Design – Featured Durban Blog

1 April 2021 by My Durban

Inspiration Behind Jersey Design:

With The Sharks set to embark on a new and exhilarating journey in the Northern Hemisphere with the launch of the Rainbow Cup, it was only fitting to design dynamic jerseys that would equip us for the exciting challenges ahead. We launched our home and away Rainbow Cup jerseys with the official hashtag  #NewJerseyNewArmour as our team is ready for battle as we face new challenges against different teams.

For the past two years our home jersey was a Black Panther themed design to fit in with the Superhero concept adopted by all four of the Super Rugby franchises. Our aim with our Rainbow Cup home jersey was to keep it relatively clean and simple to signify new beginnings, with beauty being in the details with the inclusion of subtle elements.  To symbolize that we are one team with one vision, we have included a sleek mechanical geometric pattern on the chest. We’ve brought in our shark identity with using a minimalistic gill pattern running down the sides. Our home jersey is edgy with the inclusion of high gloss arrows that draws attention to the mid-section of the jersey.

The away jersey  for the Rainbow Cup was designed to give our players a ‘home away from home’ feeling by including a half-toned image of Jonsson Kings Park wrapped around the bottom of the jersey. Our fans have always been an integral part of who we are as a brand and we wanted to incorporate the importance of our fans on the away jersey.  On the back of the jersey design we included messages of encouragement from the fans that was used in our 2020 Pledge Your Pride campaign.  With the inclusion of this messaging it signifies that no matter where we go as a team, our fans are always with us.

Have you tried: Travelling to South Africa?

Quick Durban KwaZulu-Natal Fact: Durban has a fascination with sharks; the local rugby team is even named for these magnificent creatures of the deep. The infamous Black December, which actually lasted from December 1957 to April 1958, marked five deadly shark attacks off Durban beaches in just 107 days. These weren’t the first deadly attacks – between 1943 and 1951, the city experienced 21 shark attacks, seven of which were deadly. The resulting hysteria amongst beach-goers after Black December prompted the authorities to take action, and a navy frigate was called in to bomb sharks with depth charges. In 1962, the Natal Sharks Board was created to explore the installation of shark nets at Durban’s swimming beaches, an exercise which had been attempted, with little success, as early as 1907. Nowadays, while most Durban beaches are protected by shark nets, sharks are a tourist attraction, with people coming from all over the world to have close encounters via shark cage diving.
