The Cell C Sharks successfully negotiated their way through a potential banana skin fixture last Friday when they defeated the Boland Cavaliers 41-20 in Wellington, a result that keeps them in the hunt for a top four finish.
After the first three rounds of this year’s Currie Cup competition, the Cell C Sharks have collected maximum points, their 15 log points meaning they top the overall Currie Cup table, one point above Free State who defeated Western Province this weekend and trail the Durban side by one point, also with a three win, 100% success rate.
On Saturday, the Lions suffered a shock 30-24 loss to Griquas in Kimberley, to underline just how tough this competition is, and how, on any given day, no result is certain. Indeed, the Lions might have expected things to be easier, considering Griquas’ 46-24 loss to the Cell C Sharks the previous week.
For the Durban team, the away match presented an opportunity to ‘grow’ their game, with Head Coach Robert du Preez urging more accurate performances from his team each week so that they can implement their ball in hand approach with improving success.
Four first half tries gave the Cell C Sharks a 29-3 lead at half-time, and although they managed a further two in the second half, captain Keegan Daniel felt that his team offer more than what they produced.
“We set ourselves high standards and we made a lot of errors in that game, so when we come towards the end of the competition, we’ll meet some strong opposition and if we make mistakes like that, we’re going to make it tough for ourselves,” he explained after the match.
He admitted that it was a game of two halves, particularly as far as the scoreboard reflects their dominance in the first half.
“We had a bit of a soft start and couldn’t really get into the game, but did improve and when you go into half-time with a good lead, like we had, you want to build on it,” he reflected.
“Unfortunately, we were pretty sloppy and not accurate enough in the second half and you can’t win a competition of this nature playing like that.”
Considering, on reflection, there was disappointment expressed in Daniel’s words after a win, it goes to show that simply winning games is not what the team is seeking, but performances that bring victories through accurate, exciting play.
On a positive note, this is a young side with some of the junior players still finding their feet at this level, but performing admirably as the team embrace a new style of rugby.
“We have a good mix of young and old, a couple of oldies, but more younger guys in our team and it will take a while for them to mature and understand the way we want to play.
“Our philosophy is that we want to keep the ball in hand and play a bit more rugby and with that, there will be errors. I’m proud of the way the boys have put their hands up the last three weeks.”
He also admitted that he was pleased to lead a team that has earned the full 15 points that were on offer out of these three games, but knows there is plenty of work ahead of them.
“That was the plan, we set ourselves goals and we’ve reached this one, but we know we need to take a step up if we want to be competitive in the next few weeks.”
The Cell C Sharks will host the Blue Bulls at Growthpoint KINGS PARK this Saturday evening, kick-off at 6.10pm.
