Ignition Group Sponsors Local School’s First Digital Library

12 June 2024 by My Durban

June 2024, Durban KwaZulu-Natal –  Since 2022 Ignition Group (Ignition) has been working in conjunction with The Learn Project on the Book Corners and School Library initiative.  “We believe that by supporting literacy and reading programmes for foundation phase, learners at less privileged schools get the base they need to participate in and benefit from formal education,” says Head Group Marketing of Ignition Group, Samantha Botha.

“In alignment with this priority, we want to ensure that access to resources and technology is available – and that with this accessibility we can foster economic growth and prosperity in the communities we serve,” continues Botha. “Well-educated school leavers are poised to study further or enter the working world with skills that can open up new opportunities and benefit the country’s economy in the long-term.”

Over the past year, Ignition Group has donated Book Corners and libraries to three schools in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and this month saw the donation of the very first Digital Library, a game changer in the push to bring under-resourced schools in less privileged communities into the digital world.

“Ignition Group is bridging the digital divide, by making connectivity accessible for everyone. We recognise the transformative power of the digital economy and its impact on all South Africans’ lives.” explains Botha. “I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved in a short period of time, but we still have so much to do. Over this period, we have donated 37 Book Corners and 2 full libraries, comprising 4923 books in total. Now we have launched our first Digital Library with 10 iPads.”

Each iPad (complete with covers and screen protectors) has been loaded with learning apps for reading and writing, coding and maths, to give a generation of learners the valuable skills they need to succeed in the modern digital economy. The donation also covers Tech Support for a full year, broadband connectivity and insurance provided by Techsured, part of Ignition Group’s business ecosystem.

“We were so thrilled to learn from the teaching staff at the school that since the library opened two years ago, the learners’ ability to read with understanding has improved substantially. As a result, their maths literacy rate has also increased, since the children can now read and understand their maths story sums. It’s a win-win for everyone,” Botha enthuses.

According to Ros Toerien, founder of The Learn Project, “This digital donation is a first for our organisation as well. It’s a new path we’re navigating and we’re so excited. At the tap of a button, learners can explore the world from their school desk – and technology makes all of this possible.”

ABOUT The Learn Project: https://www.thelearnproject.co.za/

The LEARN Project is a South African non-profit trust that reaches out to schools and children in need. Our goal is to equip these schools with reading books and to create sustainable libraries and classroom book corners. Our vison is to put a book into the hand of every learner in order to foster a love of reading and learning today, so that they may reach their full potential.  At The LEARN Project we aim to inspire hope, instil change and impact lives through the power of books and literacy. We believe that a reading nation is a leading nation, and that readers make leaders and leaders build nations. It is up to us to equip future generations.
