Statement by Mzamo Billy MP – DA NCOP Member on the Select Committee on Security and Justice:
The Democratic Alliance (DA) strongly condemns the horrific shooting in KwaMakhutha, Durban, in which 14 people were reportedly shot and at least 11 killed, including a pregnant woman.
Our deepest condolences go to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives. We also wish the injured strength and a full recovery during this deeply traumatic time.
The DA acknowledges the initial response by KwaMakhutha SAPS and the eThekwini District Tracing Team.
Given the seriousness of this attack, we call on Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia to ensure that the investigation has all the necessary resources and specialist support required to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
The priority must be to identify the motive, trace the firearms used and apprehend those responsible as quickly as possible. The investigation must be thorough and produce a strong, prosecution-ready case.
The affected families and the KwaMakhutha community deserve justice, support and regular updates on the progress of the investigation, without compromising the case.
Anyone with information that may assist the police is urged to report it to SAPS immediately.
