Give your Body a Boost with a 3-day Bone Broth Fast

25 April 2020 by Alan

Give your Body a Boost with a 3-day Bone Broth Fast:

Catherine Clark, Owner and Founder of The Harvest Table

4 Steps to a younger, skinnier, more energetic you!

Have you spent the last 20-something days of lockdown overeating and now boast a dreaded ‘boep’? Perhaps you have maintained your healthy eating regime, but you are struggling with fatigue, sluggishness, problems sleeping, digestive problems or joint pain? According to Catherine Clark, Owner and Founder of The Harvest Table, a bone broth fast may be the answer to your problems.
She adds that for centuries our ancestors dined on bone broth claiming it to be the Number One treatment for a multitude of ailments. Hippocrates (the father of medicine) recommended it to folks with digestion problems and Maimonides (a Egyptian Jewish physician and philosopher) recommended chicken bone broth to treat respiratory tract symptoms.

In more recent years, bone broth has made a massive comeback in the health and wellness industry and, it’s easy to see why. According to Catherine, “Animal bones are rich in calcium, magnesium, and potassium in addition to containing phosphorus, vitamins A & K, amino acids and essential fatty acids. In addition, it contains gelatine, which boasts many benefits from helping ease joint pain and improving digestion to managing blood sugar and improving sleep quality.”

Interestingly, fasting, if done the healthy way, also offers many proven benefits including weight loss, normalising blood sugar activity, decreasing cholesterol and normalising appetite by controlling hunger hormones like ghrelin. “It’s a no-brainer that together, fasting and bone broth make a powerful combination!” Catherine exclaims.

She adds that fasting may not be for everyone due to its low calorie intake however if you can manage it for just 3 days, you could reap the benefits of this liquid gold! So, what makes a bone broth fast different from other fasting fads? Catherine says that drinking bone broth gives your body the essential amino acids while giving your gut a rest from anti-nutrients in grains and other inflammatory foods. “Beyond resting the gut, bone broth is also known to support gut tissue repair that essentially ‘resets’ your gut and helps nutrient absorption in future meals. This is of course in addition to the range of benefits that include making you look and feel younger,” she says.

Interested in giving the bone broth fast a try? Catherine offers 4 steps to a successful bone broth fast:

Step 1 – Plan: Take 3 days during the week to do the fast (Don’t do it over the weekend as you are less likely to stick to it!) You can either make home-made bone broth (there are tons of easy recipes available on the internet) or you can buy bone broth powder (available from The Harvest Table) which you can just mix with water and voilà!

Step 2 – Drink: Drink between 3-4 litres of bone broth a day, for 3 consecutive days. This can be broken up into 5 intervals – 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm. You may also consume green and herbal teas, coffee and even a cup of expresso!

Step 3 – Eliminate: Eliminate all problematic and inflammatory foods during a bone broth fast including grains, packaged/processed snacks, added sugars, complex carbohydrates, sweetened drinks, dairy and refined vegetable oils.

Step 4 – Eat: During the fast you can also practice intermitted fasting by going without any food for 12-15 hours of the day (Usually through the night and morning). You may however have small salad with no dairy included (so no cheese on your salad) or lightly steamed veggies with a drizzle of olive oil at lunch time.

“We’ve encountered so many customers who have really struggled with their health over the years and after adding bone broth to their diet, have seen a remarkable improvement. Doing the bone broth fast will not guarantee you good health, but it certainly will give you a cracking start! You have nothing to lose (except weight!) and everything to gain! Go on, give it a shot. Your body deserves it.” Catherine concludes.

Have you tried: Visiting Port Elizabeth?

Quick Durban KwaZulu-Natal Fact: The interior of Kwa-Zulu consists largely of rolling hills from the Valley of a Thousand Hills to the Midlands. These have been the subject of much literature. Alan Paton, in the novel Cry, The Beloved Country, said:”There is a lovely road that runs from Ixopo into the hills. These hills are grass-covered and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it. The road climbs seven miles into them, to Carisbrooke; and from there, if there is no mist, you look down on one of the fairest valleys of Africa. About you there is grass and bracken and you may hear the forlorn crying of the titihoya one of the birds of the veld. Below you is the valley of the Umzimkulu, on its journey from the Drakensberg, to the sea; and beyond and behind the river, great hill after great hill; and beyond and behind them, the mountains of Ingeli and East Griqualand.”
