Fascinating Manta Ray Fact: Those two flappy bits in front of the mouth give the manta ray the distinction of being the only jawed vertebrate to have novel limbs. They are actually adapted from the dorsal fins, and are used to direct plankton into the ray’s mouth, and they can be curled up to reduce drag when swimming.
