Halfway up the shoulder of Dale Head (which we cheated on and parked near the top of Honister Pass, thus cutting about 1000 feet off the ascent – the buildings you can see below are Honister Slate Mine, where I far too frequently buy myself pretty pieces of green slate fashioned into semi-useful things…). We paused for a breather and some water, plus applying some suncream (poorly, in my case, as will be borne out by the sunburn on my upper arms) and Emma pulled out her Wainwright book to identify all the peaks we could see in the Scafell range just to the south of us.
