Whichever road you take directly west from Fresno, two rugged ranges of the Coast Range attempt to stop you – the Diablo and the Santa Lucia, plus there’s the less rugged Gabilan Range in between the two. Here’s a look east down the western side of the Diablo, where two major formations meet – the Great Valley and the Franciscan. The two formations are sutured, and along the suture is a belt of serpentine and asbestos. This road has since been closed to the public due to the danger of asbestos dust. We breathed a lot of it on this day.
