The Cell C Sharks Under 19s get their SA Rugby Under 19 Cup campaign started this weekend when they host the Leopards Under 19s at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in the opening round of the tournament.
Coach Mike Vowles explains that a contingent of Sharks Under 20 players will perform an important role for the side, given their success in the recent SA Rugby Under 20 Cup where they emerged as champions following an unbeaten campaign.
“Having the Under 19 comp so early in the year is something we’re navigating our way through, but
the players have responded really well and we’ve managed to build on what we started with the under 20s. We had about nine or 10 guys involved in that campaign and they will form the core of this under 19 group going forward and we will rely quite heavily on them to bring their experience and leadership.
“We’ve also opened it up to some club players which is really exciting. They’ve come on board and shown real promise and some will be getting their opportunity this weekend. It’s great to see local talent in our club system that can step up and we’re excited to see what they can do.
“The bar was set with the under 20s and what they achieved, more so not what we achieved but the way we went about it. The groundwork was put in place for something really special in terms of Sharks junior rugby and for these under 19s to follow suit and to keep flying the flag high.”
Saturday’s curtain-raiser for the Cell C Sharks’ clash with Munster in the final pool match of the United Rugby Championship kicks off at 3pm.

For the Cell C Sharks’ Vodacom United Rugby Championship clash with Munster at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Saturday evening, the big focus is on a huge performance that brings the win so vital for a place in the knock-outs.
The continuity in team selection remains, with just one change to the starting line-up, Jeandre Labuschagne replacing Hyron Andrews in the second row. There is good news on the injury front,
Rohan Janse van Rensburg who left the field against Toulouse in the Heineken Champions Cup quarter-final has been passed fit and he comes onto the bench after missing last week’s game against Benetton.
The Cell C Sharks come into this clash following a 50-35 Heineken Champions Cup Round of 16 victory over the self-same Munster team three weeks ago, also at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.
But they know it won’t be the same this time around.
“I don’t think it’s going to be the same team that rocks up here, especially after the way we played them last time,” explains Cell C Sharks prop Thomas du Toit. “They will be much better prepared, they would have had some hard, tough conversations in their camp after that game.
“So no, they won’t be that same side, they played unbelievably well against the Stormers and we will see more of that.
“So this is a different ball game, we’re not expecting 50 points – although if it comes, we’ll definitely take it – but we expect a really tough game.”
It’s going down to the wire in this final weekend of pool action with the fight for places at a premium.
“We want to end in the top seven at least and as high as we possibly can, we’re not looking at the other games and who is winning or losing, our focus on is ourselves.
“Our focus is on a win, first and foremost, and then hopefully a bonus point.”
Saturday’s clash at Hollywoodbets Kings Park kicks off at 6.15pm.

Quick Durban KwaZulu-Natal Fact: Provincial Government – The KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial government sits in the legislative buildings in Pietermaritzburg. The site where the legislative buildings are situated was occupied by St Mary’s Church, which was built in the 1860s. A new church was built at the corner of Burger Street and Commercial Road, and opened in 1884. The old building was demolished in 1887 to provide space for the legislative complex. The foundation stone of the new legislative building was laid on 21 June 1887, to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The building was completed two years later. On 25 April 1889, the Governor of Natal, Sir Arthur Havelock, opened the first Legislative Council session in the new building. When governance was granted to Natal in 1893, the new Legislative Assembly took over the chamber that was used by the Legislative Council since 1889. Further extensions to the parliamentary building were made. The building was unoccupied until 1902, when it was used without being officially opened, due to the fact that the country was engulfed in the Anglo-Boer war. The war also affected the Legislative Assembly, which had to move the venue of its sittings when the chamber was used as a military hospital.
