The Cell C Sharks will look back at the weekend’s Currie Cup match against the Phakisa Pumas in Nelspruit on Saturday with mixed feelings about the performances in the two halves.
In a match when the Cell C Sharks were leading at half-time thanks to an exciting and at times clinical performance, scores for the home team on either side of the break brought them right back into a game they were losing fairly comprehensively.
With their tales up and pulling themselves right back into the game, this gave them the self-belief and impetus to dominate in the second half, scoring 18 points to three en route to their 27-20 victory.
The delight and relief for the home side who had narrowly lost their previous three matches in the competition was instant and clear.
For the Cell C Sharks, massive disappointment.
“We’re very disappointed with the result against the Pumas,” said head coach Sean Everitt.
“I felt that we started off really well in the first half, put ourselves in a good position to get the result and then the team went into self-demolition mode in the second half.”
He identified the second half as the real area of concern when the team somehow couldn’t maintain the intensity and accuracy they had shown in the first half.
“Individual errors crept in, we gave away penalties, we gave away a yellow card and we pretty much didn’t give ourselves an opportunity,” he explained
“We have to go back to the drawing board, work hard this week and work on our individual skills and put in a better performance against Free State.”
This weekend the Cell C Sharks will be at home for the final time for the pool stages in a shortened competition.
The Free State Cheetahs will be coming to Durban after themselves suffering a narrow loss, going down 24-22 to the Golden Lions. The match kicks off at 3pm on Saturday.
