On 16 February 2016, eThekwini Region Crime Intelligence Task Team in conjunction with National Mobile Train Unit and Pietermaritzburg Hawks conducted an intelligence driven operation at Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu, Umlazi, Mpumalanga KZN and Pietermaritzburg areas. The team traced wanted suspects in connection with an armed robbery case where G4S security guard was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash. A total of five wanted suspects aged between 34 and 46 years were eventually arrested for armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as possession of property suspected to be stolen.
During the operation, a suspected stolen Kia bakkie as well as a Toyota Avanza, which is suspected to be stolen at Mayville, was also recovered. Two 9mm pistols, a Rossi .38 special plus 112 live rounds of ammunitions were recovered. The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any crime in the country. Cash suspected to be taken during the robbery was also recovered from the suspects. The arrested suspects will appear in the court soon facing armed robbery charges, possession of property suspected to be stolen and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
It is alleged that on 8 February 2016 at about 11: 30, at Symons Centre, the security guard was on his way to the ATM machine with cash when he were approached by the suspects. The guard was disarmed and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken from him. The suspects fled the scene on foot. A case of armed robbery was opened at Pietermaritzburg police station for further investigation.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members for their outstanding work in tracing the suspects. The arrested suspects will be profiled and check if they are not wanted in other robberies in the province. The members will continue with such operations to trace more suspects who might be involved in cash in transit cases, she said.
