Fidelity Security Club Rugby Update – Featured Durban Blog

1 March 2017 by My Durban

Fidelity Security Club Rugby Update:

Varsity College got their club rugby season off on a positive note when they narrowly beat the Heimat Reitz Koshuis side from the Free State University 19-12 in a hard fought game on their home grounds at Riverside in Durban North on Saturday.

It was a special victory for scrumhalf Josh Fourie who led the side after being appointed captain of the new look side that finished in fourth place in last years Fidelity Security Premier Division League. What made the win that more important is the fact that Heimat Reitz were in the final of the Varsity Koshuis competition than runs concurrently with Varsity Cup and the Varsity Shield.

The visitors from Bloemfontein opened the scoring barely minutes into the game for a seven pointer after a bad handling error by their hosts backs but that was cancelled out not much later when the local students raced in for possibly the try of the match to level matters.

From then on it was a tough fight with both sides giving it all which eventually saw Varsity College emerging the victors outscoring the visitors by three tries to two. In the other games the Varsity College Under 20 Side beat Heimat Reitz 70-0 in a one sided affair while the visitors did return to the City of Roses with one win under the belt when their Second XV edged home 11-10.

Across the Umgeni Your Communications College Rovers entertained eThekwini Fractories Amanzimtoti with the South Coast Terriers once again proving that they are one side that can cause havoc as they continued to put pressure on the 2016 Moor Cup holders. Played in a series of chukka’s it is certainly quite clear that the 2017 season is destined to be a closely contested year and judging by the crowds that turned out to watch the games this past weekend the support for the club game is setting a very positive tone for the game at club level.

It was heart warming to see all the clubs standing in one minutes silence before the kick off of their respective games in solidarity for the Thula Thula Private Reserve and the Rhino Orphanage after last weeks terrible atrocity that happened on the reserve last week.

The Ronnie van Rooyen Club Tournament hosted by Harlequins on the Bluff and dedicated to the Mightiest Quinn of them all the late Oom Ronnie, as he was affectionately known, always truly signals the start of the new season. On Saturday 10 clubs nine from KZN and Centurion from Pretoria will converge on the home of the Mighty Quins on the Bluff to do battle. Harlequins will be joined by local sides SA Home Loans Durban Collegians, Rovers. Bidvest Insurance Crusaders, Varsity College, 2016 Junior Murray Cup winners Hillcrest, FNB UKZN Impi, Kwantu Spears and Jaguars.

The draw for the annual Flya Tournament will take place at Bidvest Insurance Crusaders on Wednesday 8 March.
