EThekwini Municipality to launch Anti-substance Abuse Forum

25 November 2014 by Alan

Alcohol and substance abuse continues to destroy families, communities and society, with the youth being the most vulnerable to this scourge due to the increased accessibility of these substances.

As part of intervention to combat the situation, eThekwini Municipality will launch the Anti-Substance Abuse Forum aimed at developing strategies that will reduce this and come up with programmes aimed at assisting those who find themselves affected by alcohol and substance abuse. The three most critical aspects to be dealt with are; demand reduction, supply reduction and harm reduction. The Forum will provide a positive platform to engage debate and share best practices in dealing with the demand.

The eThekwini Anti-substance Abuse Forum will be chaired by Mayor James Nxumalo and will consist of representatives from various Government Departments, the business sector, academia and NGOs who will be nominated by the Mayor, in his capacity as the Chairperson.

The abuse of women and children is usually associated with alcohol and substance abuse, hence launching the Forum during the 16 Days of Activism for no violence against against the abuse of women and children is a significant symbol of the Municipality’s commitment to ensuring that residence are able to live in a safe and healthy environment.

Details of the event are as follows:

  • Date: Thursday, 27 November 2014
  • Venue: Durban Exhibition Centre, Hall 2
  • Time: 09h30- 14h30
Category: GovernmentTag: Anti-substance Abuse Forum
