EThekwini Hails Peaceful Marches

EThekwini Municipality has welcomed the peaceful and orderly conduct of the widely observed marches held on 30 June, with no major incidents of violence, loss of life, or widespread damage to infrastructure reported across the City.

EThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba commended residents, march organisers, and law enforcement agencies for ensuring that the demonstrations were conducted responsibly, describing the outcome as a victory for public safety, social stability, and democratic engagement.

Continuous monitoring by the City’s multidisciplinary task team throughout the day confirmed that the marches proceeded peacefully, reflecting responsible civic participation and effective coordination among all stakeholders.

Mayor Xaba said the conduct of residents demonstrated that democratic rights can be exercised in a manner that safeguards lives, property, and community wellbeing.

“As the City leadership, we are pleased with the conduct of residents who participated in the marches held across eThekwini. We are encouraged that there were no major incidents involving loss of life or widespread damage to infrastructure. This demonstrates that communities can exercise their democratic rights responsibly while preserving the safety and stability of our City,” said Mayor Xaba.

The Mayor also expressed appreciation to the various law enforcement agencies for their professionalism, vigilance, and coordinated efforts in maintaining public order throughout the day.

“Our appreciation goes to the men and women in uniform who worked tirelessly to monitor developments, manage crowds, and protect residents. Their vigilance, commitment, and swift response capabilities contributed significantly to the peaceful outcome witnessed across eThekwini,” he said.

While the marches were largely peaceful, a few isolated incidents were reported in Clermont and other areas.

Law enforcement officers responded swiftly and successfully contained the situations, preventing any escalation.

Mayor Xaba reaffirmed the Municipality’s commitment to maintaining law and order while thanking residents for choosing peace and responsible civic participation.

“The events of the day reaffirm that partnership between communities, law enforcement, and government remains our strongest defence against instability. Together, we have demonstrated that it is possible to uphold democratic freedoms while protecting lives, property, and the future of our City,” he said.

The Municipality will continue to monitor developments closely, with law enforcement officers remaining deployed across eThekwini to maintain stability, strengthen public safety, and safeguard communities.
