eThekwini Fully Supports Black is beautiful Campaign

9 September 2015 by Alan

The eThekwini Municipality has leant its support to the Ngimnyama Ngimuhle (Black is beautiful) Anti-Bleaching Campaign.

The Municipality has provided the venue and marquee for the event, to be held on Saturday, 12 September 2015 at Botanical Gardens. Members of the public are encouraged to attend the free seminar.

A range of experts will be on hand to speak to both men and women on the dangers of skin bleaching as well as promoting self-acceptance and self-love. Inanda Radio host Mapule Mchunu is the face of the campaign and will be at the event to interact with the public.

A number of prominent skin care experts as well as celebrities including DJ Sox and Uzalo actress Dawn Msomi are lined up. They will share the dangers of using skin lightening products and the effects it may have on your skin. A psychologist will also talk about the reasons women and some men resort to these drastic measures.

The event hopes to discourage the use of these products which despite being banned in South Africa are available at a number of stores and beauty salons. Some women use household bleaching products to lightening their skin.

There are a number of dangers associated with the practice including black marks, acne, pigmentation and thinning of the top layer of the skin.

EThekwini Deputy Mayor Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala fully supports the initiative and says a platform like this is needed to address this issue.
