EThekwini Municipality has learnt with shock about the accident involving a Durban Transport Bus that occurred near Bridge City in KwaMashu this morning.
The accident, in which four people died, occurred at approximately 06h30. The bus ferrying about 60 passengers was travelling from Ntuzuma E-Section to the city centre. In addition, 27 people including the bus driver sustained injuries.
The injured passengers were taken to Mahatma Ghandi Hospital and local clinics.
Fifteen people received treatment and were later discharged from Mahatma Ghandi Hospital while three were admitted to the same hospital. One patient was transferred to King Edward Hospital.
The remaining nine passengers were treated in local clinics for minor injuries.
The Municipality and Tansnat (the bus service operator), are investigating the cause of the accident which is unknown at this stage.
Acting Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala has expressed deepest condolences to the families, relatives and friends of the four passengers who lost their lives and wishes all those that are in hospital a speedy recovery.
“The loss of one life is one too many. Our hearts are with the bereaved families during their time of grief,” she said.
The Municipality would like to thank all Emergency, Medical and Rescue Service personnel who arrived at the scene to assist the injured.
