In an effort to address the increase in bogus undertakers, eThekwini Municipality is inviting all legal and illegal undertakers to register on the Municipal database.
By registering, undertakers will allow the City to monitor the sector and curb the rise in illegal undertakers.
Head of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit Thembinkosi Ngcobo said the Municipality has witnessed a growing number of illegal undertakers and monumentalists, dealing in headstones and plaques, which has had a negative impact not only in the business sector but has affected grieving families.
“The tough economic climate has given rise to bogus undertakers and monumentalists. As a City we have had to find ways of regulating this industry,” said Ngcobo.
He said systems have to be in place to ensure that the industry is well regulated. “By encouraging these businesses to register, this will not only allow them to be on a database but to be part of empowerment programmes that will assist them to do business legally,” he said.
In 2017 the Municipality launched the Radical Economic Transformation Framework aimed to promote inclusive business growth, empower entrepreneurs and promote social cohesion.
Ngcobo said: “We invite both legal and illegal undertakers and monumentalists to come forward so that collectively we will address this matter. This opportunity will also assist them with relevant skills and compliance to help legalise their businesses.”
Registration will commence from 1 to 30 September. Registration forms are obtainable from the 7th floor, Delta Towers Building, 303 Dr Pixley KaSeme Street or can be emailed on request.
