To celebrate World Environmental Month, eThekwini Municipality will host the Waste Management Reading Promotion Competition, where pupils from various schools will be given the opportunity to share with their peers their interpretation of waste management and nature conservation.
During the competition pupils will be afforded the platform to showcase their talents through music, poetry, story-telling and reading under the theme “It starts with me. Clean & Maintain My School, My Area, My City”.
The competition is a fun, creative and interactive way for primary school children to also create awareness, educate and encourage each other to keep our environment clean and sustainable through creative art in order to promote environmental literacy.
The competition is at the Final Stage, as the preliminary rounds were held in the North, South and West Regions earlier this year.
Approximately 105 schools participated in the preliminary stages and this was whittled down to 40 schools that will participate in the final stages.
These schools will compete in the following categories; choral music, story-telling, poetry, drama and isicathamiya.
All the participating schools will receive certificates and the top three positions will be awarded medals and trophies. Prizes for the winning schools also include an educational trip to the Umgeni Bird Park and vouchers for school shoes and uniform.
The programme is under the banner of “Clean and Maintain My City” Campaign, an initiative by the Municipality to encourage citizens to clean and maintain their local areas. Through this campaign, the Municipality encourages communities and schools take care of their environment and promote sustainable living.
Environmental Day is celebrated annually around the world on 05 June. The day is used to highlight and promote environmental awareness issues and programmes.
