Once again the KZN Science Centre (KZNSC) team are out in the districts of Sisonke, Zululand and uMkhanyekude implementing the Career Jamborees 2015 initiative for the second year running.
This amazing initiative is rolled out via a tripartite partnership between the KZNSC as the implementer, the KZN Department of Education, and MiET Africa as part of their Keep a Girl in School Campaign. This year, the project targets 8000 grade 9 female learners from selected schools within the aforementioned districts in an effort to capacitate these young women toward a brighter future through education.
The KZNSC team are currently travelling to schools in the Sisonke district with a focussed educational programme that will be further rolled out to the other 2 districts in the coming months.
The programme looks at introducing learners to the topic of subject selection during this important time where their subject combinations will impact greatly on their opportunities in the years ahead. Further to this, learners are taken through exciting psychometric exercises to allow them to explore their individual personalities and aptitudes.
Finally, learners undergo a careers awareness workshop, which allows them to make informed decisions about their career choices for the future. All this culminates into an inspiring and empowering programme for these learners.
When asked about the KZN Science Centre’s stance on the Career Jamborees initiative, CEO Ms Candice Potgieter had the following to say; “this initiative is one that is close to my heart as a female professional, [as] it sends a strong, positive message to these learners that education is the key that will open a multitude of opportunities if they show determination and apply themselves to their schooling careers”.
An African proverb states that if you educate a woman, you educate a nation; the KZN Science Centre through its partnerships is surely fulfilling the greater mandate of Ubuntu in the province of KZN.
