Editorial at Less Than 1.5% of Print Cost

8 September 2026 by My Durban

The traditional print media method of calculating advertising costs is based on Column Centimeters – the higher the number (or coverage) the higher the cost.

There are still many media monitoring companies that use this measure to determine the worth of an editorial in an online publication. This is normally referred to as the AVE (Advertising Value Equivalent).

The main differences between online and print:

  1. Speed to publication
  2. Choice of publication
  3. SEO benefits – no benefit from print
  4. Longevity – an article will stay around for a very long time

We took a recent advertising quotation from a newspaper and produced this comparison.

Comparing traditional print advertising rates calculated in column centimeters against digital publishing reveals the stark value proposition of online distribution.

Print Media Advertising Costs:

In traditional print media, advertising costs scale sharply based on physical page area (column centimeters) and overall word count:

Package / Advert Size Article Length Traditional Print Rate Cost Comparison vs. MyPR Budget Release
Option 1: 38×8 Full Page 800 words R21 500.00 (excl. VAT) MyPR is 430x cheaper for full article coverage.
Option 2: 19×8 Half Page 600 words R12 900.00 (excl. VAT) MyPR is 258x cheaper for half-page equivalence.
Option 3: 19×4 Quarter Page 400 words R7 000.00 (excl. VAT) MyPR is 140x cheaper for quarter-page equivalence.
Option 4: 10×4 Eighth Page 200 words R3 500.00 (excl. VAT) MyPR is 70x cheaper for short-form equivalence.

Visualizing the Value Overlay

If you superimpose these traditional column-centimeter frames over the MyPR Budget Featured Press Release announcement (which spans approximately 300 to 400 words):

  • 10×4 Frame (R3 500.00): Would cover only the first headline and introductory paragraph before running out of allocated column space.
  • 19×4 Quarter Page (R7 000.00): Would cut off halfway through the bulleted submission guidelines.
  • 19×8 Half Page (R12 900.00): Would cover the full bullet points but truncate the regional tag options and boilerplate details.
  • 38×8 Full Page (R21 500.00): Would be required to fit the entire press release, single feature image, boilerplate, and contact links.

MyPR AVE:

At R50.00, the MyPR Budget Featured Press Release covers the 100% full-length article, 1 featured image, boilerplate links, and up to 3 regional republication tags – delivering complete coverage at less than 1.5% of the cost of the smallest traditional print slot.
