A new organisation has been formed to unite Eastern Province Cricket and Border Cricket under a single banner in order to promote cricket development in the province.
“The establishment of Eastern Cape Cricket (ECC) will strengthen the game in the province,” says chairman Donovan May, who is also president of Eastern Province Cricket (EP Cricket).
The deputy chair of the new organisation is Border president Simphiwe Ndzundzu.
“Our objective is to grow cricket in the Eastern Cape down to grassroots level. This includes schools’ cricket and club cricket,” says May.
“There will be a special emphasis on women’s’ cricket. Greater attention will also be paid to creating opportunities for the disabled to play the game,” he says.
The formation of ECC makes cricket in the Eastern Cape fully compliant with the “geopolitical alignment” of Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), according to May.
All the provinces are required to have only one representative body.
The Eastern Cape is, however, expected to retain its two seats on the CSA Members Council.
Border Cricket and EPC will continue to run their existing regions as the province is too big geographically for a single body, and both are deeply rooted in their regional district cricket structures, according to May.
They will continue to be responsible for raising funding and securing sponsorships for their respective operations and teams.
May has a history of successfully founding cricketing bodies. He has been involved in local and national cricket administration since 2004, and was a founding member of the Warriors franchise and now ECC.
He has been president of EP Cricket since 2013 when he took over when Ep was under administration and serves on the board of Cricket South Africa, where he sits on four committees.
Ndzundzu has been president of Border Cricket since July 2019, after serving on the board as a member and vice president.
A forensic auditor by profession, he was previously a selector for Border Cricket, and has been involved with Good Hope Cricket Club for many years. He was the Chairman of the King Williams Town Members Structure.
The founding secretary of ECC is Stuart Fortuin (Border-Acting CEO), and the treasurer is Dr Mark Williams (EP-CEO). Additional members are Border Cricket representatives Ngqaleko Rubushe, Mfundo Macanda and the Rev Cyril Hartland
The EP Cricket reps are Breakfast Mxolisi, Leon Coetzee and Mzameli Dikeni.
“With this strong team we will be able to ensure that the Eastern Cape continues to produce franchise and international-standard players,” says May.
