The Durban Green Corridor has introduced a public viewing area at the KwaDabeka Adventures site, the Pump House Weirs, to allow the public to catch the exciting Dusi Canoe Marathon action on Saturday, 15 February. This is the last viewing point for the marathon before it ends at Blue Lagoon.
This vantage point will allow the families and supporters of race participants to look out for friends and to watch the competitive paddlers at the head of the field as they shoot the pump house weirs and rapids below the new high level bridge over the uMngeni River.
The new high level bridge now offers quick access in and out of the area enabling supporters to watch a race participant through this section of the river and still get down to Blue Lagoon to see the same person finish.
The site offers safe parking and controlled access to the area to watch the action where the bulk of the field are expected to portage past the main weir and rapid between about 6.40am and 10.30am. They will be followed by the leaders and A batch paddlers who are expected to shoot the weir and rapids between about 11.45 am and 13.15pm.
The Durban Green Corridor together with the Dusi uMngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT) River Care programme has been cleaning up this notoriously polluted section of the river as part of their ongoing programme, which employs well over 200 people throughout the uMngeni River catchment between Pietermaritzburg, Howick and the Estuary.
The majestic cliff faces along the northern bank, forests and waterfall provides a stunning environment for a morning out at the river. This is complemented by a network of trails for hiking, mountain biking and birding throughout the area. Local guides will be on hand should you want to explore the river and alternative viewing spots.
The Green Corridor’s youth development programme and participation of the Claremont Community Tourism Organisation have created a buzz in the local area and the community are expected out on Saturday morning to support the paddlers and to welcome visitors to KwaDabeka.
