At 15h10 on Saturday the 17th of September, NSRI Durban duty crew were activated following a call for assistance from Durban Fire and Rescue after a vehicle had gone off the Bridge and into the river in Amanzimtoti.
The duty crew responded by road, in heavy rain, with their 4×4 rescue vehicle and Discovery Rescue Runner.
The driver had managed to free himself from the vehicle and had reached the river bank without any injury before the Sea Rescue team arrived. Other medical services attended to the driver while the vehicle was recovered from the river.
Sea Rescue was stood-down and the crew started making their way back to the rescue base when another accident happened close by. The NSRI crew made their way to the scene of the second accident.
Sea Rescue crew started stabilising both occupants in the vehicle, before paramedics arrived on scene. Sea Rescue stood-down again when their services were no longer required.
“On the way back to the Sea Rescue Base the crew stopped for some hot drinks in the Wimpy at Arbor Crossing, Amamzimtoti and were treated to free coffee. This kind gesture was greatly appreciated,” said Durban Station commander Clifford Ireland.
