HARTS HILL was the first of the three famous Pieters Heights attackedby the ill-fated Irish Brigade on the 23rd, and held with such tenacity untilvictoriously carried on the 27th February, 1900. From the summit of Harts 178 tn%Sfi8fiwtefta&Mtn *& mmmta Hill a splendid viewis obtained. Besideis the Monte Cristorange and the Hlang-wane slopes. On theright is the Colensoplain, the windingTugela, and theDrakensberg forminga background. Imme-diately on the left arethe other two hills,Railway andP i e t e r s , formingthe trinity whichbarred the outer gateof the beleaguredtown. Looking froman opposite aspect towards Ladysmith, will be seen Shebas Breasts, Grobe.laars and Doom Kloof ranges, and across the plain below, the Umbulwanaobstructs a further view. Railway Hill and Pieters Hill, together with HartsHill, were the three chief physical characteristics in the closing scene of thegreat campaign. Road Bridge, Colenso, 1899
