Durban employees step up to the plate in support of DHL’s 1 000 000 meals campaign

DHL’s Durban based employees are proud to support the global leader in express logistics’ “1 000 000 meals by December” campaign by volunteering at FoodForward SA.

Launched at the end of September, this exciting campaign has seen DHL support two iconic food distribution charities, FoodForward SA and Mother Soup, as part of its goal to prepare and deliver a combined total of 1 000 000 meals to various communities in need by December.

“This is a great initiative,” says Sikhumbuzo Mngomezulu, Duty Operations Supervisor – DHL Durban. “Poverty and hunger are rife in our country, more so during the lockdown period, so this will help FoodForward SA to feed more mouths. No contribution is more precious than time. I am really proud to be able to play a part and hope that I inspire my peers to be a part of similar initiatives now and in the future. I really enjoyed learning about FoodForward SA’s partners, supply chain and donors. The Durban branch makes magic happen with a small team, limited resources and a great work ethic.”

Established in 2009 to address widespread hunger in South Africa, FoodForward SA connects a world of excess to a world of need by recovering edible surplus food from farmers, manufacturers and retailers, for redistribution to registered beneficiary organisations that serve the poor. FoodForward SA calls this cost-effective model Foodbanking.

“The support that FoodForward SA has received from DHL employees in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg has been overwhelming,” says Andy Du Plessis, FoodForward SA Managing Director. “We currently serve a network of 1,000 registered, verifiable Beneficiary Organisations, enabling us to reach 475,000 vulnerable people daily. DHL’s support has and will make a difference in so many lives just in time for the festive season. The past couple of weeks have seen us make tremendous progress in reaching the 1 000 000 meals by December goal. We are very close.”

The second charity to form part of DHL’s 1 000 000 meals by December Campaign, Mother Soup was founded during lockdown and focusses on supplying nutritious hot soup to hungry communities in the Cape Town metropolitan area as part of a community-led initiative to help those hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mother Soup is a partnership between Woodstock Brewery and Great Commission United, a non-profit organisation that has been in existence since 2000.

DHL employees in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban have been volunteering at these charities from September to December in support of DHL’s 1 000 000 meals by December Campaign.
