
An excited Wiles explained that GraphConnect Europe 2015 is geared towards all those interested in Graphs and Neo4j in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “At Chillisoft we have been building bespoke business systems for eight years and we have, like many others, traditionally always used relational databases (MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle and Firebird). We have just implemented our first sizeable graph-based system using Neo4j and have been incredibly impressed with the technology and the potential of graphs. We are particularly interested in ways that we can use graphs to augment legacy systems because much of what we do is to help customers update their legacy systems while keeping them running,” Wiles said.
He said that he aims to not only learn about the latest developments in the graph space and Neo4j itself from key members of the Neo4j team but take advantage of free one on one graph clinics at the event.
His address, titled ‘Unlock value from the connectedness in existing relational data’, will see Wiles sharing patterns for processing relational databases into graphs – data patterns, processing patterns and visualisation patterns. He will provide examples of the use of Neo4j’s ETL API and show how companies can take existing data they have and unlock value through the power of the graph.
“Despite the rise of NoSQL, enterprises still have much of their data in relational databases and large systems built on top of this data. You can unlock value from existing data by translating the normal forms of your relational database into to graph forms. This can be done without rewriting your transactional system but instead by mapping to a graph in batch time (once per day, every hour, or even every minute). In doing so, you can retain all the details of the data, while enhancing it with visualisation and connectedness plus all the power that comes with that,” he explained.
